HOW TO SQUARE DANCE

Modern Square Dancing is team dancing done in groups of eight people. The following steps are the simplest explanation for this dance that provides endless variations, layers of  complexity, physical fitness, mental acuity, a community of friends and infinite hours of fun!

  • STEP 1: Each team of eight dancers form a square, two per side.
  • STEP 2: The Caller (dance instructor) teaches the calls (dance steps) and puts them together to form a dance.
  • STEP THREE: Caller calls out the calls, dancers dance the calls. The laughter starts when calls are missed or incorrectly done. Attempts are made to "fix" the square as fast as possible, ready for the next call.
  • STEP 4: Repeat Steps 1 to 3.

Modern Square Dancing can be traced back centuries to it's humble beginnings. It originated with the settlers who came to this country, bringing with them their traditional dancing. The various folk dances changed and merged, and were guided by a caller who remembered the dance steps. Wikipedia has an excellent description of Modern Square Dancing at  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modern_Western_square_dance
