IT'S SO MUCH MORE!
Today's square dancing has morphed from the single Traditional Square Dance program of 25 calls (dance steps) to many programs and over 500 calls.
But don't let that number scare you. Our Social Square Dance program limits calls to 50. Focus is on having fun while learning to dance.
IF YOU CAN WALK AND LISTEN AT THE SAME TIME, YOU CAN SQUARE DANCE!
There's no fancy footwork and no one leads the dance.
This is team dancing with a group of eight friends. Laughing and fixing "the square" when something goes wrong is part of the fun!
NOT ALL OF THEM!
The choice is yours - casual, dressy, western or traditional outfits. Casual is the popular choice.
Important to wear comfortable, indoor shoes that protect your feet and the floor.
NOPE, YOU'LL HEAR ALL KINDS.
Rock, pop, blues, classical, salsa, Latin, old country, new country and more.
Any music with a strong beat is
square dance-able.
FALSE!
It has the same benefits as low impact aerobics. Easy to clock 7000+ steps in an evening.
Dancing uses both sides of the brain - a proven workout for the mind.
Even better, square dancing turns exercise into something that's FUN to do with a group of friends.
NOT TRUE - IT'S MULTI-GENERATIONAL.
From families with school-aged kids, to young teens and adults, right through to baby boomers and beyond.
The Caller (dance instructor) can adjust the program to suit the dance floor - new or experienced, younger or older.
EVERYONE'S WELCOME!
Singles, couples and families. Our group is an even mix of singles and couples.
Note: It’s not unusual for two ladies to partner up. Children must come with their parent(s) and be old enough to take instruction.
NO, ROUND DANCING IS
A COMPANION TO SQUARE DANCING.
Often an evening of square dance will include some round dancing, such as two-step or waltz.
Round dancing is ballroom dancing, but with a twist. Individual dance steps are taught. The dance instructor arranges those steps into a dance, and announces each step just before the dancer carries them out.
In this way, dancers do not need to memorize sequences and partners do not need to take the lead or follow. Some say this is an easier, less stressful introduction to couple-dancing.
Round dancing got it's name because couples form a large circle around the dance floor. As they dance, they progress around the circle in the same direction, to prevent collisions with other dancers.
